Record ₹42,702 Crore Inflows to Indian Stock Market: What You Need to Know

Indian stock market records ₹42,702 crore inflows in July, raising concerns about sustainability and risks.

Indian Stock Market Sees Record Inflows Amid Tariff War Fears

Retail investors have poured a record ₹42,702 crore into the Indian stock market in July. This happened despite the looming threat of a tariff war. This marks the highest-ever monthly tally for the segment, with a sharp 81% surge.

Sectoral Funds Lead the Charge

Sectoral funds have grabbed the highest 15% share, recording a whopping 1,882% increase month-on-month. Small-cap funds have also seen a significant 61% month-on-month growth, with ₹6,484 crore in inflows.

Analysts Warn of Risks

However, analysts caution that this trend may not be sustainable. Dr. VK Vijayakumar notes that sectoral funds are highly risky and tend to underperform in the long run. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking advises a balanced approach. He warns that sectoral funds can be difficult to manage if a particular sector takes a hit.

Experts Offer Contrasting Views

G Chokkalingam of Equinomics Research believes a sectoral approach is more relevant than ever. This is due to the unique macro factors and domestic factors at play. He cites the trade war impact and shifting domestic trends as key reasons. However, he also advises diversification within the equity asset class.

Can Inflows Be Sustained?

The sustainability of equity inflows remains uncertain, with Trump’s massive tariffs on India posing a significant challenge. Ajit Mishra expects some moderation in numbers, particularly in small- and mid-cap segments, as earnings performance drives the narrative. On the other hand, Sunil Subramaniam believes strong buying support in equities will continue. There is nearly ₹57,000 crore available to mutual funds to defend the market.
