India to Offer Subsidies for Rare Earth Magnet Manufacturers
The Indian government has drawn up a scheme to offer subsidies. These subsidies are worth Rs 1,345 crore. They are for manufacturers of Rare Earth magnets in the country. Union Minister of Heavy Industry, H.D. Kumaraswamy, announced this on Friday.
Scheme Details
- The scheme is currently under inter-ministerial consultation.
- Two manufacturers are proposed, but this may change.
- Manufacturers engaged in end-to-end processing from Rare Earth oxides to magnets will be eligible.
Eligible Companies
- Private and public sector companies will be eligible for incentives.
- Homegrown automaker Mahindra & Mahindra and auto components manufacturer Uno Minda have expressed interest.
Importance of Rare Earth Magnets
- Used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and electronic goods.
- Crucial in electric motors and medical devices like MRI scanners.
- Generate strong magnetic fields with a small size.
Reason for Subsidy
- China’s export restrictions have impacted global supply.
- India aims to reduce dependence on Chinese imports.
