GST Overhaul on the Cards: Finance Minister to Meet Industry Leaders

The government is set to revamp the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime with proposed GST 2.0 reforms. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet industry leaders on May 27.

Industry leaders will present their expectations and recommendations for GST reforms. Top officials from the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs will attend the meeting.

The government aims to introduce fundamental reforms with GST 2.0. The meeting will help build consensus with states for a unified reform path. Industry representatives will shape the reform roadmap.

The Centre wants to simplify the GST structure. A key proposal is to phase out the 12% tax slab. A three-rate system with 5%, 18%, and 28% slabs is being advocated.

This simplification will reduce litigation and improve compliance. It will also boost consumer demand. Economists agree that rationalizing GST will increase consumption.

The government will prioritize resolving classification issues, especially for food items. Ambiguities have led to litigation and revenue leakages. The government wants to bring clarity and uniformity to tax treatment.

GST has been in place since July 2017. Stakeholders have flagged complexities and compliance burdens as key issues. The government is working to address these concerns with GST 2.0 reforms.
